Denis Wood creates maps that are like novels: they try to describe everyday life. Here are some of the ones he tells us about in episode 110, “Mapping” on This American Life.” The map above shows what you might see “if, in the middle of a summer’s night, you were to lie down at the intersection of Boylan and Montfort Avenues and look up.”

Illustration copyright Linzie Hunter

Spam is an unfortunate part of our digital lives whether it comes through emails or blog comments. I’ve often thought about doing something creative with it. Others have been more motivated than me, with lots of people writing poetry based on spam. I like Linzie Hunter’s take. Her Spam One-liners is a series of experiments with hand lettering from spam subject lines. The hand drawn style re-frames the pitch and the context in a lighthearted manner. (via Dooce)

The work of graffiti artist, Banksy (Robert Banks) is bold and subversive. He’s made a name with large street stencils and graffiti in England. He’s also a successful artist selling work for thousands of pounds, but his identity has been “fiercely guarded”. Apparently, a photo has emerged that perhaps shows the artist at work according to this BBC article. Whether or not we know what he looks like isn’t important. His work is everywhere. See the Flickr Banksy group for over 4,500 photos of his street art taken by people.

One of my favorite artists and illustrators is Craig Robinson (aka Flip Flop Flyin’), creator of pixelated Minipops, art books, animations and more. Since his early work like Minimoma, he’s had me entranced with his detailed mini-pixel people and his humor.  His new book, Atlas, Schmatlas, is now out with 128 pages “chock-a-block with essential information (fact and fiction), maps, and illustrations about every country in the world.” For some excerpts from the book, check out the site, then go buy at it at your local book shop, or online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble or Borders. Craig has so kindly provided a quick quiz on the side of his site to help you figure out if you’ll like the book. One of the questions is “Do ya wanna funk?” Yes? Well go buy the book then.

Elizabeth Perry has been doing a drawing a day and today she twitters that she’s reached drawing one thousand. “People have been asking me what I planned to draw for my one thousandth drawing, and I’ve said that I wasn’t sure, wouldn’t be sure until I sat down to draw, because that’s the way it works most days.  And that turned out to be true. I kept thinking that something important or significant would occur to me - something that would let me reflect on what I’ve been doing and what it has meant to me. But in the end, everyday life won.” Well said. Milestones are important to all of us, and her dedication to doing something everyday inspires us, but ultimately, we love that her story is about “slowing down, the sitting down, the noticing.” We look forward to the next 1000 drawings!
