The Tyrant Clock, designed by Alice Wang has to be the meanest alarm clock concept ever invented. Some alarm clocks make a terribly annoying noise or require you to complete a physical task to shut them off. There's even some now that will shake your bed until you're up. Not the Tyrant Clock. This clock takes waking up into pure psychological warfare territory. You're not going to hear many alarm clocks called pure diabolical evil but there you go, you just did.The clock syncs up with your cell phone, randomly goes through your contact list, and then calls someone different every three minutes after your intended wake up time. It displays in a large size the name of the person who's about to get their own wake up call from you. The potential for it to call someone and in some way completely ruin your life is huge. A disaster waiting to happen, which would make it the ideal alarm clock.

7 Vote(s)

One of the hottest viral videos of the last couple of days shows a man in a neoprene suit on a DIY waterslide, flying 115 feet and then landing safely in a kiddie pool. It's accumulated more than 1.4 million views since it got uploaded to YouTube last week, and reactions were all over the place, ranging from dropped jaws to sheer amazement to a more cynical, "Nah, this can't be real."And, after a bit of investigating, we've verified that it indeed wasn't. The video was a carefully crafted viral ad for Microsoft's Office suite Project 2007, and the production of the clip involved, among other things, a stuntman, a lot of editing, and a long piece of rope. Read on for more details about the campaign as well as an exclusive snippet of unedited video from the waterslide shoot.Read More: http://bit.ly/20zoCO

3 Vote(s)

Dahon, maker of folding bikes, has shown off a rather ingenious and incredibly useful little gizmo at the Eurobike show. The BioLogic FreeCharge is a little silicone-encased box which hooks up to your bike's generator hub and siphons off power for charging your gadgets. The unit comprises a battery and circuitry to both store electricity and to smooth the inevitable bumps and spikes in the generator's output. Then you simply plug in your cellphone or iPod to the USB port, juicing the GPS as you ride. The time to a full charge is three hours, but the most likely use for this is topping-off, keeping your gadgets going indefinitely as you trundle along. And think about cycle touring: you can charge iPods, phones and even camera batteries, freeing you from the tyranny of camp-sites and power outlets. Fantastic, and $100 when it ships in March 2010.

10 Vote(s)

Students at the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany are developing a pair of interactive data eyeglasses that can project an image onto the retina from an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) micro-display, making the image appear as if it's a meter in front of the wearer. While similar headwear only throws up a static image, the students are working on eye-tracking technology that allows wearers, with just the movement of the eyeball, to scroll through information or move elements about. The glasses are designed to provide information to wearers who don't have their hands free to operate a keyboard or mouse.

12 Vote(s)

A system that rules the way the inhabitant sees the outside world and simultaneously frames the way the outside sees the dwellers. The design of this object was focused on this theme. The big curved window is this statement vortex, it creates a visual path that, like a camera traveling, reveal the image of the landscape. The programmatic development of the house reflects the classic bourgeois organization promoting the clear division of rest areas leisure areas and work areas. This division creates tree limbs that are united by this design morphing that develop the two big windows of the living room. The idea of landscape as an image and its importance in the domestic living were the main design focus of this scheme."

8 Vote(s)

These doodles are done using instruments and techniques I have developed over the past 6 years. Before that, like anyone else, I did a lot of scratching with sticks. As a calligrapher I have a particular interest in African colonial and pre-colonial writing systems, so when I doodle on the beach its often along these lines. The more angular letter styles take their inspiration from Tifinagh, the script of the Tuareg people of North Africa. It is interesting how that, even to this day, the Tifinagh resembles ancient Greek and Phoenician. The interesting-looking characters in other pieces are usually taken from west African symbols such as the Adinkra symbols of the Akan people of Ghana and the Ivory Coast. They're mostly meaningless doodles - a play with form.- &rew

5 Vote(s)

The company has developed a "carbon-negative" cement that absorbs more greenhouse gases over its life cycle than it emits. If adopted on a wide scale, this innovation could have a huge impact on the overall health of the environment, given that the annual production of conventional Portland cement is responsible for an estimated five percent of global CO2 emissions, more than the airline industry."

5 Vote(s)

Page removes layers from magazines and billboards, revealing the rainbow of colors behind the images. These topographic assemblage designs focus on eyes and strip away the collections to their core.In the artist statement, Page describes his desire to investigate the dichotomies between materiality and images, occupied space and presence, and potentiality and reality. He transforms the everyday objects into personal expressions and informs his work with "personal memories and consumer culture angst."

4 Vote(s)

Responding to the owner's need for space to house visiting friends and family, the Rolling Huts are several steps above camping, while remaining low-tech and low-impact in their design. The huts sit lightly on the site, a flood plain meadow in an alpine river valley. The owner purchased the site, formerly a RV campground, with the aim of allowing the landscape return to its natural state. The wheels lift the structures above the meadow, providing an unobstructed view into nature and the prospect of the surrounding mountains. The huts are grouped as a herd: while each is sited towards a view of the mountains (and away from the other structures), their proximity unites them. They evoke Thoreau's simple cabin in the woods; the structures take second place to nature. The CRISTAL system, simply put, turns a coffee table into a universal remote for your home theater, lights, digital photo library, and even vacuum.View the demo Video on the site.

5 Vote(s)

We've always known that the crew of the USS Enterprise was a multitalented group of individuals, but who knew the ship herself could also be a multitasker. Take for example this concept thought up by designer Bobby Dixon for the famous science fiction space vessel, created to promote the new Star Trek film. Now instead of traveling across the cosmos at warp speed, the Enterprise can play those old jazz and blues records that you are so fond of on the ship's saucer section. Yes I know some of you right now are reading this article with a raised eyebrow much like Spock would when he hears something strange. But look at it this way: if the Enterprise can be turned into a Christmas Tree ornament, is a phonograph really that horrible?

7 Vote(s)
